“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14

I learned this scripture in 1970 shortly after I was saved. By 1972 the Lord began to open ministry opportunities through the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship in Amarillo, Texas. Since I was trained by Morris Means to pray and then to pray some more, as chapter president I started a weekly one hour prayer meeting to seek the Lord’s face and His favor to reach lost souls in our area. Only two other men would pray consistently with me every week. Because the Lord promises that if we pray, He will hear, forgive our sin and heal our land, we were able to minister in Texas, Colorado, New Mexico and Oklahoma through chapter meetings and conventions.

Throughout the 1970′s I experienced people praying and living the promises of 2Chronicles 7:14. Quoting scriptures is not the same thing as praying. I witnessed an increased anointing in Morris Means’ ministry when he decided to pray a minimum of 8 hours per day. He reasoned that his primary job was to pray and seek the Lord’s face. At any other full time job, he would have to work at least 8 hours per day. Why not pray 8 hours per day?

He was attending a small country church in an abandoned school house at that time. The pastor left and the people asked Morris to step in as pastor. The church continued to prosper under Morris’ leadership and Morris continued to pray faithfully 8 hours per day. Soon the church outgrew the schoolhouse and built a new church and school in a town of 5000 people. The facilities were paid in full but Morris found himself busy taking care of the flock and managing the school. One day he noticed that the anointing was leaving him. And the church was not flourishing. He called a meeting with the Elders and told them his concern about the loss of the anointing. He stressed that he had to go back to praying 8 hours a day like he had done at the old school house.

The Elders told Morris that since he was being paid a salary, Morris had to work at the school and take care of the congregation. Morris knew he needed to pray to have God’s anointing, so he resigned as pastor. When you pray like it says in 2 Chronicles 7:14 an anointing comes on you that exceeds any thing you could have desired. Seek a relationship with God like Morris did 8 hours per day. Do not read the scripture; do what it says and God will marvelously heal your land, your family, and your circumstances. Morris took his job to pray very seriously and sought God’s anointing. Because Morris prayed he reached people who today have Christian ministries all over the world. Remember, if you already pray, well go pray some more!

In 1971 I was one of the older youths attending the youth prayer meeting in Morris’ house. We were seeing miracles, signs and wonders as we prayed as a group for the sick. I personally was praying 4-5 hours per day in both English and in tongues when I received a phone call from a Baptist Pastor from a nearby town. He had a group of 15 people meeting in the church basement who wanted to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. He invited me because I was the only Catholic he knew of who spoke in tongues. I took a friend who had had the Holy Spirit longer than I had to the evening prayer meeting.

When we arrived, we found the basement of that church filled with townspeople. I gave my testimony about prayer and talked about the miracles we were seeing in the Hereford youth prayer meeting. I took 30 minutes to give a teaching on receiving the Holy Spirit and made sure everyone who wanted the gift of tongues, had received it.

I had noticed that someone had brought two people who were crippled to the meeting. I asked my friend who had accompanied me to pray for the sick. While I was making sure everyone had received the baptism of the Holy Spirit, my friend took off and the two people were seated in the center of the basement with the other congregants seated in a circle around them.

The man had a metal brace on his short leg. I figured the Lord could not heal him while the brace was on. I escorted the man to the bathroom so he could remove the three inch lift. He limped severely back to his seat. I knew the Lord healed people because I had seen it at Morris’ home prayer meeting. I lifted the man’s legs and prayed in the name of Jesus and nothing happened. I prayed in tongues for this man’s healing and again nothing happened. I felt new boldness in my spirit and declared under my breath: OK, God, I did my part. Now do yours! Immediately the man’s leg grew out and the man could walk on his own–without a brace–without a limp. The girl was crippled due to an Achilles tendon cut in her feet. She was immediately healed when I prayed for her.

The Lord got all the glory for healing those two people. And many lives were changed that night when they were touched by the power of the Holy Spirit. But I would have never been so bold if Morris had not empowered me with the tools of fervent prayer. If you have already prayed, well go pray some more!

Meeting Morris Means in 1970

A chiropractor friend of mine took me to a small pentecostal church asking that I keep an open mind during the service. We were a little late so the worship service had already begun. As my friend was trying to find us a place to sit, I noticed that the people had their hands lifted up, eyes closed and smiles on their faces. They actually seemed happy to be in church and I wanted a little bit of the peace they had. That July of 1970, I was born again!

Three months later, I was still separated from my three children, going through divorce and living in my parents’ home as an adult and licensed chiropractor. But I had peace that surpassed understanding and more than anything, I wanted to share my Lord and Savior with the people I had known in my hometown of Hereford, TX. My thought was to open a new practice and have home prayer meetings in that office.

I needed a sign on my door and several people recommended a Christian sign painter by the name of Morris Means who lived in Hereford. Since I was not busy with patients, I began to talk to Morris about the Lord. Shortly into our conversation, Morris asked me if I prayed. I answered, yes, I pray. Then he asked how long do you pray? I answered at least 15 minutes. He never told me how long to pray. He always said, well go pray some more! That conversation started a lifetime of fellowship and prayer.

I had many issues to deal with especially with my troubled marriage. I would seek Morris for his advice. He could have sent me to the counselor, the pastor, the psychiatrist. Instead, he would look at me and tell me to go pray some more. Morris mentored me to pray and seek answers from Jesus on his prayer road. We would pray together out loud and in tongues for hours. I have always walked fast and when Morris figured I was walking the prayer road too fast, he would take me out to the country and leave me with a bible for 5 hours so I could pray with fervor and without interruptions. Fellowship with Jesus in prayer made my problems go away.

Soon Morris invited me to attend a youth prayer meeting at a lady’s house. The prayer meeting grew so big that we had to move it to Morris’ house. Every room in the house was filled with high school kids on their knees praying for renewed hearts and for the salvation of their friends. When people came with physical problems, the young people and I would pray for the sick in Jesus’ name and they would be healed. Many of those young people have successful ministries all over the world today because they learned to pray some more as Morris always instructed. Seeking Jesus through prayer was the foundation on which to build our Christian walk.

¿Has orado hoy?

I was born again in a small Pentecostal church in 1970, because I wanted some of the joy those people had on their faces when they were praising the Lord during worship service. I knew I was different inside even though I did not know the vocabulary of being saved or what having a born again experience meant for my eternal soul.

Two weeks later, I was at a home prayer meeting hosted by a Catholic charismatic couple. The man was teaching about the importance of praying in tongues. A lady, who was a guest, said she really did not understand about praying in tongues. She suggested that maybe if she heard tongues, she would understand the concept. I vividly remember that we all stood up and raised our hands. Our hosts prayed in tongues and I prayed in tongues. When I received the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues, the Bible became alive to me.

Many people receive the Holy Spirit and even speak in tongues, but they are not taught to pray continually in the spirit. They do not realize that they could be praying in the spirit– praying unselfishly–interceding according to the Holy Spirit who lives in us. All we have to do is open our mouths and let the Holy Spirit flow through us in a perfect prayer.

Shortly after I was born again and had received the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues, I moved back to my hometown of Hereford, TX. I wanted to start a prayer meeting so I could witness to my childhood friends. My new Chiropractic Office needed my name painted on the door and I heard about a Christian sign painter named Morris Means. As he worked, he asked me if I prayed. Of course, I said. Yes, I pray. Then he asked, for how long do you pray? Oh, at least 15 minutes, I answered. Then he told me that I needed to pray more, and as he put it some more.

Whenever I talked to Morris about my problems–my wife was divorcing me and would not let me see our three children–Morris’ advice to me was a question: Have you prayed? Regardless of my answer Morris always said “Well, go pray some more.” He trained me to pray to Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Because I sought the Lord in prayer, I noticed that my problems seemed to diminish. Morris did not send me to a counselor or a church leader, but directed me to the dusty prayer road outside his rural home. I had lots of time to pray so I spent hours and hours in prayer mostly in tongues.

I observed in Morris Means a life transformed by prayer. His home prayer meetings caused a revival among the high school teenagers of Hereford, TX in the early 1970s. When as a pastor, he prayed 8 hours per day for the church. It grew to over 400 members, all because he understood his job description as a fervent seeker of God.

If you want to become prosperous both in business and in Christian ministry or leadership, let me give you the advice I received from Morris every time I talk to him: Have you prayed today? Well, go pray some more! I want to encourage you to reconnect with the Holy Spirit who abides in you. Go pray some more in tongues!

How to pray- the steps of a disciplined prayer life

The devil is our enemy. He will use every power he has to stop us from praying – especially in tongues, which is the only unselfish prayer we can utter.

Plan your week ahead of time. Schedule time to pray in tongues whether it is one hour per week, 5 hours per week or 15 hours per week.

Plan your place of prayer away from life’s distractions. We live in a quiet neighborhood with good sidewalks, so I walk and pray. Praying is good exercise for the soul as walking is for the body.

If your schedule is as busy as mine pray for two hours straight on a Sunday afternoon. I’m almost 70 years old and have cut my work schedule to have energy to pray.

If you are too tired to pray consider plugging into the source of energy – Jesus, our intercessor. St. Paul modeled an energetic prayer life and in Ephesians 6:18-20 stated “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.” In other words He prayed in the spirit continuously in order to preach boldly the gospel.

Praying in tongues is like tithing. The more you pray, the more time you have to do what you enjoy like playing golf or spending time with the grandchildren.

So as my spiritual father, Morris Means, would ask, Have you prayed? Regardless of the answer, his response was “Well, go pray some more!”

Young Dr Billy Graham

Billy Graham spoke at the 10th annual Convention of FGBMFI held in Seattle on July 6, 1962. His speech was transcribed in the Voice Magazine issue of October 1962 and it was titled “Something Is Happening!” In his 4th paragraph, page 3 he states, “And I want to say that I do need your prayer; I need prayer in my own personal life. When one is traveling as many of you do and preaches and proclaims and gives out, his own heart becomes very needy and very hungry and his soul becomes thirsty. And I need your prayers that God will give to me an infilling of His Holy Spirit, that I may have the unction and the power of the Spirit of God in the proclamation of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
In John 14: 12-18 Jesus was answering Philip who had just asked Jesus to show them the Father. “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it. If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.”

What impressed me about Billy Graham is that he was already a successful evangelist in 1962. During the 10th anniversary convention, he recognized that the FGBMFI was a new movement of lay evangelists who traveled extensively giving their testimony. He humbly asked for prayer from those men who understood the pressures of being travel weary and who relied on the power from the Holy Spirit. Wow! How refreshing to have a religious leader ask for prayer from laymen who love the Lord.

The scriptures in John 14 explain why we should pray. Jesus did not get exasperated with Philip but rather explained the reasons for prayer. We should always pray in the name of Jesus and that the Father be glorified in all we do. Jesus promised all believers the Comforter who will dwell in us so that our prayers will accomplish the works and the will of God. So, be encouraged to pray in Jesus’ name and to give your testimony of what God is doing in your life. And if you have already prayed, well,go pray some more!

E. M. Bounds on Prayer, published in 1997 by Whitaker House, 30 Hunt Valley Circle, New Kensington, PA, 15068, ends Chapter 1, “The Force that Shapes the World” of Book One, Purpose in Prayer, with a paragraph on page 13, which states, “Prayer is God’s settled and singular condition to move ahead His Son’s kingdom. Therefore, the believer who is the most highly skilled in prayer will do the most for God. Men are to pray ” for the advance of God’s cause. The one who can wield the power of prayer is the strong one, the holy one, in Christ’s kingdom. He is one of God’s heroes, God’s saints, God’s servants, God’s agents. “ “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you (Matt. 7:7).” The strongest one in Christ’s kingdom is he who can knock the best, and the secret of success in Chris’s kingdom is the ability to pray.

As we pray and pray more, we will see the answers to our prayers. If we pray for specific things to advance God’s kingdom and as we pray in tongues for hours, God will give us ideas for which we should pray.

In 1993, a chapter president came to me with a concern that we were not winning the lost in our monthly FGBMFI meetings. He asked, “What are we going to do to change our chapter from a social club to a soul-winning outreach?” My answer was that we would start a one hour per week prayer meeting to ask God to show us where to seek the men and women to be saved. After about 18 months, the chapter president said the Lord had given him an idea to win the lost. After several miracles we were allowed to open a new chapter on a military base – Fort Sam Houston.

In the last ten years, we have seen over 8000 young medics, both men and women, saved. We have been on the base giving testimonies at breakfast meetings 10 months out of the year. We are currently facing new challenges which require a miracle to be able to stay on the base. We need you to join with us in prayer so that we can continue winning the lost at Fort Sam Houston.

If you want a chapter, a church or a Christian outreach to win the lost or the Lord has placed a burden that requires your asking, seeking and knocking on doors that are still closed, set yourself aside and pray some more. God’s grace will open the doors of the unsaved in your area. You are called to be the strong one ”the prayer warrior ” for your land. So go pray some more

Mi padre espiritual, Morris Means, me enseñó a orar.

Él siempre estaba dispuesto a animar a toda persona.

Prayer – the Legacy of the Future

E. M. Bounds on Prayer was published in 1997 by Whitaker House, 30 Hunt Valley Circle, New Kensington, PA 15068. In Chapter 1, “The Force that Shapes the World” of Book One, Purpose in Prayer, page 13, E.M. Bounds states, “The man who has prayed many acceptable prayers has done the truest and greatest service to the incoming generation.” In other words God allows us to pray ahead for future generations that we may never see in our lifetime. “The prayers of God’s saints strengthen the unborn generation against the desolating waves of sin and evil. Woe to the generation of sons whose fathers have been too busy or too unbelieving to pray. They whose fathers and mothers have left them a wealthy legacy of prayer are very fortunate, indeed.”

One of my dad’s sisters traced our family roots to my great-grandfather born in 1839, who moved his family from Germany to America, because he did not want his sons to serve in the German wars of the1800s. I do not know how or what great-grandfather Peters prayed, but not one of his 471 descendants listed in the 1982 chart my aunt compiled served in war. Dad and his brothers were exempt from service during World War II because they were farmers. Three of my younger brothers could have been drafted during the Vietnam War, but the Lord worked it out so their lottery number or schooling prevented their service. My brother, Dr. Frank, a nephew and I served in the military voluntarily but none of us experienced war. If we as parents or grandparents will start today, praying in tongues for the future generations, we can be certain that God will bless our future descendants because as old prayer warriors we left a legacy of prayer then let’s pray some more, way more!

More spiritual fathers are needed in the world today

When E.M. Bounds mentioned fathers who pray, the Lord reminded me of the men who have fathered me into prayer or mentored me towards leadership. These “fathers” have given me a dual inheritance. My spiritual father, Morris Means, taught me to pray. He walked and prayed with me on a “prayer” road near his house. If he felt I was losing my focus on prayer, he would drop me off on the desolate open fields of West Texas in the morning with the instructions to pray a full day. He always sent me to Jesus for answers.

In the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International, the directors taught me by example how to give a personal testimony. When directors came to a chapter meeting or the regional conventions we had in Lubbock or Amarillo, it was always to encourage and support our efforts. They would make it a point to introduce me to directors from other parts of the country which encouraged me. Demos Shakarian was the spiritual father to all in the Fellowship. I never heard Demos speak badly about any person or organization. He always encouraged everyone he met. When I got back from Pakistan and told him that 5,000 people had come to the Lord, Demos was more excited than I was. He was the only person who encouraged me about Pakistan. Demos felt that we were called to take nations for Jesus. Be a diligent father or mother with regards to the legacy of prayer.
