An Auto Accident

In 1979 I had just relocated from Amarillo to Fredericksburg, TX. I had just opened a chiropractic office in the town, population 5,000 people, and 70 miles from San Antonio. One evening my family was out of town so I went to eat supper at a restaurant on Main Street. It was very dark that evening. As I drove down the street a pick-up pulled out of a local bar right in front of me. As I was stopping, I heard a thump in front of my car. I stopped, looked behind my car and there was a man lying on the pavement. I had hit the man. The police came and the ambulance took him to the hospital. About an hour later, the police called me to tell me the man had died.

I had been praying in the spirit and although the phone call startled me, I felt complete peace about this situation. I saw a Bible on a cabinet and asked for the Lord’s wisdom. I opened the Bible to the 91st Psalm and the peace that passeth understanding came upon me. I knew I was not at fault and we learned later that the man was a chronic alcoholic. The man had walked across the middle of the street into my path.

The weekly newspaper carried the story in the front page. The story could have ruined my new practice but none of my patients mentioned the negative news to me. So, regardless of your fortune or misfortune, always pray and follow the advice in Proverbs 3:5-6 to “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding; in all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.”
